On the work
Every story follows someone, and in The Protagonist you have to find that someone first. Among scraped grays and heavy strokes, a thin green shape rises, rounded like a head and shoulders, so faint the gray shows through it. It comes and goes behind a black line that seems to hold it back, and half erased, it still hasn't left the story. In the end the canvas got past that line; it made it out, and it lives with a collector now. Main characters are rarely the loudest thing in the frame, and this one is the quiet shape you almost missed.
