On the work
Collared can mean dressed for respect or caught and held, and the title leaves both readings standing. Behind pale bars built into the frame, gathered newsprint crowds the space, faces and scraps of type laid over one another, none of them seen whole. Those bars were built into the piece by the same hand, and they turn it into a closed-in space where everything arrives in strips. Now the piece hangs in open air, and it brought its bars along; they still decide how much of anyone comes through. The difference is where you stand: on the open side, looking in.
